Valentino Rossi has a message for young riders after ‘terrifying’ crashes at Austrian GP

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that racing bloody motorbikes is a pretty f**ken hazardous gig. Yeah, nah, the bloody things are bonza as f**k, but at top speed, the blokes riding ‘em may as well be sitting on missiles if they’re not taking the proper precautions. After a huge bloody bingle in the Austrian Grand Prix, legendary rider Valentino Rossi hasn’t minced his words.

“You need to respect the other riders that are on the track with you,” he said after the accident. That might seem like a pretty f**ken callous thing to say after an accident, but given the context, you can hardly blame him.

Franco Morbidelli’s Yamaha collided with Johann Zarco’s Avintia Ducati, and the careening bikes nearly skittled Rossi.

He told reporters, “I was with Maverick when we entered turn three and I felt something coming towards me. I thought it was the shadow of the helicopter because sometimes it crosses the race track.”

It wasn’t a helicopter, though. Yeah, nah, it was a f**ken projectile motorcycle.

“It was so scary, it was terrifying,” he said. “I think it is good to be aggressive because everybody tries to do the maximum, but for me we don’t have to exaggerate, because we need to remember that this sport is very dangerous.

“You need to respect the other riders that are on track with you. We can’t forget this sport is very dangerous, especially in a track where you have long straights and you’re always going 300kph.”

Rossi wasn’t the only one who narrowly escaped a collision, though. Rossi said Zarco’s bike ‘jumped over’ Maverick. “We were very lucky, but we hope this type of incident is a lesson for riders to improve their behaviour in the future.”

Final thought: Yeah, it’s hard to make him wrong. Obviously, people don’t mean to crash their f**ken bikes and accidents are accidents, but if you’re putting others at risk with aggressive riding, you might want to have a look at how a legend like Rossi has gotten to where he is and listen to his words. Just a thought. Still, let us know if we’re wrong or not. You know where to do it.
