Star Wars Disney releases luxury furniture collection

You’d have to be a full-blown ding-a-ling not to know that half the fun of Star Wars is in the toys and the merch. And, in fairness, most of us know George Lucas’s juggernaut space opera really paved the way for other entertainment franchises when it came to selling everything from action figures to lunch boxes, but they’re still at it. And that’s a great thing for Star Wars fans who like to be comfy, because they’re now doing your furniture. Check it out…

Right now, Star Wars is in the midst of another huge push from Disney. They’ve just opened the Star Wars-themed section of Disneyland, they’re making too many movies to count and a whole new generation is learning the importance of making sure your sheila is not your sister before making out with her.

With all that in mind, Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue has been tasked with designing a whole range of Star Wars furniture. The whole set has just made its way to the states from the Philippines and you can bet the rest of the world won’t be too far behind.

In fairness to Kenneth, though, he wasn’t actually super-keen at first: “At first, I said, you don’t need me for this because I don’t make replicas of machines, and Star Wars fans will only buy something if there’s the face of Darth Vader on it—I don’t do that,” he told the Philippine Star last October. “They said, ‘No, no, no. We want you to interpret through the lens of a Filipino designer.’”

Obviously, they threw more money at him, because he did end up accepting the challenge:

“I wasn’t sure how to marry my design philosophy and language with that of the Star Wars franchise, but I decided to view it simply as a design challenge…I knew I needed to incorporate the various shapes and motifs from the world of Star Wars sufficiently enough to make them recognizable but to also stop short of being too literal. Finding that balance proved to be the project’s biggest challenge for me.”

You can see the results in the pics we’ve gathered here for you. Be warned, though. It’s a bit on the pricey side.

Final thought: For the serious collector, this is a pretty nice addition to the usual action figures, statues, lunchboxes, t-shirts, bedsets, posters, board games, video games, toasters and wallpaper. While we’re not really sure of the practicality of it for the price, we reckon there’ll be loads of people who are on this in no time.
