This awesome “Work it” karaoke performance was shared by Missy Elliott herself

You know as well as we do that karaoke performances can go a couple of different ways. It’s worth mentioning to start with that skill – and the actual ability to sing – isn’t necessarily the only thing that defines a good karaoke performance. The singer’s exuberance, blood alcohol content, and confidence all play a part. With that in mind, it’s safe to say, Mary, the performer of this killer rendition of Work it absolutely nails it…

Besides cats, epic fails, and crazy Russians, terrible song covers have to be up there as one of the most ubiquitous genres of video on the internet. And I’m gonna be honest, when I saw another karaoke video come up in the news feed, I kinda thought I was in for a good laugh. After all, Mary just doesn’t look like she’s about to absolutely crush this Missy Elliott stalwart.

On top of that, it’s a nice looking park. There are trees and grass, and I presume, people barbecuing pork chops and eating sausages. Sh*t, there are probably kids rolling around on tricycles and at least one guy sleeping under a tree. And then Mary opens her mouth.

Yeah, nah, Mary is not sh*t at all. She clearly knows this song well. So well that she f**ken smashes the bits of gibberish, she bloody aces the elephant trunk sounds, she knocks the whole thing out of the park. She knows it too, the cheeky old duck. She’s got that shimmy and that wiggle, and anyone who steps up after her has got a bloody tough act to follow.

That probably explains exactly why the video has over four million views and has been shared by Missy Elliott herself, Jada Pinkett Smith and Beyonce’s mum. Missy Elliott’s praise was high indeed. She called Mary her ‘funky white sister’ and said she ‘killed it’.

High praise indeed.

Final thought: When it comes to karaoke, there are a lot of haters out there, but when the performer of the original song you’re covering praises your version of one of their biggest hits, you know you’re onto a good thing. F**ken good sh*t, Mary. This Top Sheila award is all yours.
